The Yoga Shala

Wellness with Becky Yoga Shala is a cosy little sanctuary in Horsforth, West Yorkshire. With easy access from surrounding areas such as Rawdon and Cookridge.

The shala is located in a quiet residential area behind Leeds Personal Training on Low Lane, where it is easy to focus on your yoga practice and close off your mind from daily chores and worries. Classes are small and intimate, with a maximum of 8 - 10 students, thus enabling each student to get a lot of attention, adjustments and support during their practice. At the Wellness with Becky Yoga Shala, everyone is welcome to practice, from beginners to seasoned yogi's.

So, whether it's a remedy or prevention, for aches and pains or whether you're looking to be more relaxed and mindful, book into a class my Yoga Shala.

About Ashtanga Vinyasa.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Primary Series is taught at Wellness with Becky Yoga Shala in Horsforth, Leeds.

Ashtanga literally means 8 limbs in Sanskrit and consists of external and internal disciplines and Vinyasa is synchronicity with breath.

The Primary Series in Sanskrit is known as Yoga Chikitsa which detoxifies and cleanses the system and also aligns the body. The Primary Series is the foundation to all the other series in Ashtanga Vinyasa, in which there are 6 series.

In Ashtanga, the same sequence is done repeatedly. This enables the student to develop their own self practice known as Mysore practice. Each posture prepares you for the next and so to progress through the sequence takes time and patience. HOWEVER, the absolute beauty of the practice is also that it is accessible to anyone. There are always modifications of postures students can do, so the practice is adaptable to what each individual student needs.

Remember, it is not about the destination, but what you learn on the journey.

Over time, the practice can become a moving meditation. Continued practice can increase stamina and strength, detoxify the system, calm the mind and can increase focus and concentration.

"Yoga Changed My Life and It Can Change Yours Too"

I have been teaching yoga since 2010 and have had the experience of helping over 4000 clients to feel good in their body (and mind), I know the positive impact yoga can have on every aspect of your life.

Becoming a Yoga Teacher led to me discovering the importance of mind body connection, breathwork and mindset training, and ultimately to me becoming an NLT Practitioner and from there a TRE Provider.

Yoga was my entry platform for my journey into helping people.

But things weren't always like this...

I was actually stressed in paradise!

When I was growing up, I'd dream about one day going on an adventure and travelling the world. Aged 25 I started living that dream.

First stop was Tokyo to teach English and then on to Thailand and the magical island of Phuket.

Living in Phuket should have felt completely relaxed and zen... Wrong! I was feeling overwhelmed and work stresses were getting on top of me.

I’d already been having panic attacks for a number of years and I had heard that yoga could potentially help with them, so I decided to just give it a go. What did I have to lose?

My First Time in a Yoga Class (My wake up call!)

When I first stepped into the yoga shala, I had no idea how that one decision, to try something new, would change my whole life's journey.

Once in class and being guided by my teacher, I realised that my breathing was terrible... the words "steam train" come to mind. My flexibility and overall mobility was poor, my strength, non-existent! And that's the first time I realized that my mind and body were totally disconnected. Even when my teacher said "take a deep breath and relax", I simply couldn't.

Of course I couldn't relax. Of course I was stressed. My body was begging me to slow down and pay attention. I'd been ignoring it for so long!

Yoga was the wake up call I needed.

It's Yoga practice, not Yoga perfect.

I began to practice daily with my yoga teacher Julie Hirunchai, and fell in love with it.

Finally I could breathe!

Finally I could move!

At long last my body and mind had began to reconnect.

My body was freer than ever but the bigget surprise was my new mental clarity. This is what got me REALLY curious about yoga and it's potential.

The more I practiced, the more I wanted to understand my own mind and body, and this put me on the path for a self-growth adventure.

First up was Yoga Alliance 200 Hours Yoga Teacher Training, with Paul Dallaghan (Pattabhi Jois Authorised) and since 2012 under Ajay Kumar of Sthalam 8 in Mysore, India -- which I now consider to be my second home.

Time to share my passion for Yoga with the world.

Armed with all this passion, excitement and knowledge about how good yoga can get you feeling, I opened 'The Little Yoga Room' in Phuket.

Literally a 'little yoga room'; this was a humble wooden sanctuary on stilts -- nothing fancy, just a practical yoga space.

The Little Yoga Room went on to be a popular little place with glowing reviews and was actually one of Phuket's most highly rated Yoga Shalas. I'm truly grateful and humbled by my students for continuing to show up. Over the years I have learned so much from teaching them.
